From 1st to 2nd December, a group of 11 teachers and students from the Asian Future Leaders Scholarship Program (AFLSP) of Zhejiang University visited Shouchang Aviation Town and Xin’anjiang Hydropower Station in Jiande, Zhejiang Province. During the field trip, they also held a seminar in English which served as a platform for them to improve their communication skills, team spirit and leadership.

Haruna:

  Haruna (Japan):

Although Jiande Aviation Town has just been established, I felt it was full of vitality and energy. On the afternoon of the first day, we held a seminar on how to improve our scholarship program. As the moderator, I listened to my fellow students’ analyses and suggestions on this topic. I deeply felt that getting the scholarship meant that we should make ourselves better and strive to be future leaders of Asia.

Yura:

  Yura (South Korea):

The seminar during the field trip allowed me to discuss how to improve our scholarship program with other students. The cohort of 2018 and I prepared materials before the discussion, comparing the program of Zhejiang University with that of other universities, and analyzing the past activities of Zhejiang University itself. I hope our fruitful outcomes during the event would be taken into account for the future plan.

  Natsumi (Japan):

The facilities and information provided by the Aviation Museum are up-to-date and very interesting! The teachers and several classmates experienced the flight simulator. I could tell from the real-time monitoring screen that the flight simulator was hard to operate because they flied it boldly but the result was still unsatisfying. We should be thankful that they are not real pilots. Then, we went to Henggang Memorial Hall. The real objects used by the workers reminded us of their daily life at that time and allowed me to get a taste of Chinese history.

Gaby:

  Gaby (Singapore):

The visit to the Aviation Museum and Henggang Memorial Hall allowed me to understand the evolution of Shouchang’s core industries. Originally the largest metallurgy industrial base in Zhejiang Province, Shouchang has evolved from its industrial roots intoan appealing place for tourists through the development of its aviation town in the late 2000s. I saw several examples of this from the exhibits: from smelting steel to creating and repairing complex aviation machines; and from having no awareness of the environmental degradation due to mining activities, to pursuing beautiful living spaces through developing its aviation town. I felt that Jiande was a wonderful example of achieving harmonious development of human and nature by leveraging its natural resources.

  He Binjun (Thailand):

The exhibition hall of the Aviation Town integrates such functions as the introduction to the town, project display and sensory experience. I realized the opportunitiesbrought by new technologies. I believe that in the future, our life will become more convenient with the development of science and technology. I also visited Henggang Memorial Hall, which was established to commemorate the past glory of Zhejiang Hengshan Iron and Steel Factory. Founded in 1960, the factory went through ups and downs in its 43-year history, from which I learned that only by keeping pace with the times can a business achieve long-term development, or it would be eliminated from the market.

Honja:

  Honja (Japan):

When we visited Henggang Memorial Hall, we fully understood the considerable influence and status of Hengshan Iron and Steel Factory at that time. The local guide told us that women of marriageable age were honored to marry a man working in the factory. Although the factory announced bankruptcy eventually in 2003, thanks to the country’s vigorous support for the aviation industry and the opening of low-altitude airspace in recent years, the town has been famed for its development in the aviation industry. During the visit to the Aviation Museum, we found that Jiande Qiandao Lake General Aviation Airport is one of the most well-equipped and busiest general aviation airports ineasternChina.

Jake:

  Jake (Japan):

Xin’anjiang Hydropower Station was built in 1957, just a couple of years after the foundation of new China, and was put into operation in 1960. Even after 58 years, it still has a beautiful appearance. It happened to be raining when we got there. Surrounded by fog, the dam looked like a magnificent work of art standing amongst the mountains.

  Min Young (South Korea):

It wasa rainy and foggy day. We thought there would be nothing to be enjoyed at Xin’anjiang Hydropower Station because of the poor visibility, but when we arrived, we were amazed at its tremendous size. Actually, hydropower stations in South Korea have no way to compare to this one in scale. I heard that it is the country’s first large-scale power plant designed and built by the Chinese in 1957. Although many people migrated owing to its construction, it resolved the power shortage problem in eastern China. I have a deeper understanding of China thanks to this field trip.
